Sandra Hamer - Author
Sandra Hamer is a native of Grand Junction, Tennessee. She has been a Christian since her teen years. Hamer has been writing fiction since the mid 90's. Currently, she is a middle school language arts teacher with Memphis City Schools. She is also pursuing an Ed.D at Union University in Educational Leadership. Sandra has lived in Memphis, Tennessee since 1983 arriving at then Memphis State University to pursue her collegiate education.
The author of GLORY THE HAIR has a B.A. in Communications from the University of Memphis. She has a Master's of Arts in teaching from the U of M. Hamer also has an ED.S in Educational Leadership from Union University. She has been employed with the Memphis City School system since 1999 starting as a substitute teacher. Before teaching school, Hamer was an overnight anchor/reporter at WMC-TV 5 in Memphis. She has 13 years of experience in broadcasting and also worked as an assignments editor at TV 5 and WHBQ-TV in Memphis. She has previously worked with Black Entertainment Television news as a freelance correspondent. In the Memphis market, she was a radio talk show host at WLOK-AM 1340, a writer for the Tri-State Defender in Memphis and Contempora Magazine in Nashville, Tennessee and a DJ for WUMR-92 FM.
In addition to being an author and speaker, Hamer is also a poet and playwright. She worked and helped to found Young Filmmakers Foundation. She was director of this non-profit for 9 years. The foundation provided quality after-school and summer programs to inner-city youth at no cost to them or their families. Her play "Truancy" has been performed three times before Memphis audiences at the Rose Theatre on the campus of the University of Memphis.
Hamer is a member of Temple of Deliverance Church of God in Christ, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the National Education Association, The Tennessee Education Association, The Memphis Education Association and a past member of the Grizzlies Fan Advisory Board. She is still a huge Grizzlies fan.
